HISTORY
Transnational Crime Units in the Pacific were established from the Pacific Transnational Crime Team Network (PTCN) in 2002 with the support from the Australian Government after September 11, to counter transnational crimes in the Pacific when Pacific Governments recognized the changing nature of crimes and the increased impact of transnational crimes such as drugs/arms trafficking, terrorism, money laundering, human smuggling and people trafficking etc. in the Pacific Region.
TCU ia a multi Agencies Unit involving Police, Customs and Immigration Officers. Samoa TCU was officially opened in March 2003 with:
- 4 Police Officers
- 2 Customs Officers
- 1 Representative from the PM's Office/Immigration
ROLES AND FUNCTIONS
- To provide a proactive transnational criminal intelligence collection, analysis and dissemination capability to the Board of Management.
- Detect, dismantle and disrupt transnational organized crime impacting on the border of Samoa and the Pacific as a whole.
- Analyze information in relation to producing reports, assessments and briefings in relation to Transnational Crime and Border Protection issues.
- Liaise with various departments and agencies in relation to border control issues and investigations.
- Act as the primary point of contact in country for transnational and cross border matters.
- As appropriate, requests obtain and or provide advice to local enforcement agencies in relation to criminal and financial investigations.
